If you’re considering vinyl flooring for your home or business, you’ve likely come across two terms: vinyl flooring and luxury vinyl flooring (LVF). While they may sound similar, there are key differences in construction, appearance, durability, and price that can significantly impact your flooring decision. At Jason’s Carpet and Tile we want to breakdown each to help you understand the distinction.

1. Construction & Materials

Standard Vinyl Flooring

  • Typically comes in large, flexible sheets (known as sheet vinyl).
  • Made of a thin layer of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) with a printed design layer and a protective topcoat.
  • Generally glued directly to the subfloor.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring (LVF)

  • Comes in planks (LVP) or tiles (LVT) for a more realistic wood or stone look.
  • Composed of multiple layers, including:
    • A thicker, rigid or semi-rigid core (WPC or SPC core options available).
    • A high-definition photographic design layer.
    • A durable wear layer that resists scratches and scuffs.
  • Often designed with a click-lock system, making it easier to install as a floating floor.

2. Appearance & Design

Vinyl Flooring

  • Offers a broad range of colors and patterns but could look less realistic than real wood or tile.
  • Designs are usually printed on a thinner layer, which may lack depth and texture.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

  • Mimics the look and texture of hardwood, ceramic, or stone.
  • High-quality embossing and texturing make it nearly indistinguishable from natural materials.
  • Often includes beveled edges and varied plank widths for added realism.

3. Durability & Performance

Vinyl Flooring

  • Water-resistant and easy to clean, making it suitable for bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Less durable over time due to its thinner construction and lower wear layer.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

  • Highly durable—ideal for high-traffic areas, homes with pets, or commercial spaces.
  • Many LVF products are 100% waterproof and offer a stronger wear layer that resists scratches, dents, and fading.
  • Better underfoot comfort and sound absorption due to thicker construction.

4. Installation

Vinyl Flooring

  • Often glued down, which can be more labor-intensive.
  • Requires a smooth and clean subfloor for proper adhesion.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

  • Many options use click-lock technology, making installations smooth and seemless.
  • Some types can even be installed over existing floors.

5. Cost

Vinyl Flooring

  • More affordable upfront, making it a budget-friendly option..

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

  • Slightly higher cost per square foot but offers a great long-term value.
  • With it providing greater design appeal and durability can help increase a home’s resale value.
