Removing Common Carpet Stains: Wine, Coffee, Pets & More
Mon, Nov 10, 2025

Carpet can bring warmth, comfort, and style to almost any room of the home—but life happens, and sometimes that means spills and stains. Whether it’s a glass of red wine, a morning cup of coffee, or a furry friend’s accident, knowing how to treat stains quickly and correctly can keep your carpet looking it’s best.
Here’s a simple guide to removing the most common carpet stains and keeping your carpeted floors fresh and spotless.
Red Wine Stains
Few things make your heart skip a beat like red wine hitting the carpet. Don’t panic though as quick action can save your night and your carpet:
What to do:
- Blot, don’t rub! Use a clean, white cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible.
- Mix a solution of one tablespoon of dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water.
- Apply the solution to the stain and blot gently from the outside in.
- Once clean, blot with plain water to rinse and dry the area with a clean towel.
Avoid using red or colored cloths—they can transfer dye onto your carpet.
Coffee Stains
Morning spills happen to the best of us. The key though to minimize the impact is to act before the stain sets in.
What to do:
- Blot up as much coffee as you can immediately.
- Mix a solution of one tablespoon of dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water.
- Apply with a clean cloth and blot until the stain fades.
- Rinse with cold water and blot dry.
If the stain lingers, a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (on light-colored carpets only) can help lift remaining discoloration.
Pet Stains & Odors
Accidents happen—even with the best-trained dogs and cats. The trick is not just cleaning the stain but also removing the odor that can linger.
What to do:
- Blot up as much of the mess as possible.
- Apply an enzymatic cleaner, like Nature’s Miracle. These cleaners are specifically designed for pet stains as they break down odor-causing bacteria.
- Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then blot dry.
- For stubborn odors, sprinkle baking soda over the area once dry and vacuum after a few hours.
Note, it is important to avoid Ammonia-based cleaners for these types of stains as they can mimic the smell of pet urine and cause repeat accidents.
Food & Grease Stains
From chocolate to pizza grease, food stains can be tough.
What to do:
- Scrape off any excess gently with a spoon.
- Blot with a clean cloth dipped in warm, soapy water (mild dish soap works great).
- For greasy spots, apply a little rubbing alcohol to a cloth and dab lightly.
- Rinse with water and blot dry.
If your stain just won’t budge—or you’re dealing with delicate or high-end carpet—it’s best to call in the experts. Professional carpet cleaners have specialized products and tools that can remove deep-set stains without damaging your carpet fibers.
