Entryway hardwood flooring

Your entryway is the first impression your home makes. It’s also one of the toughest areas in Florida’s climate: wet shoes, rainstorms, humidity, salt air (if you're near the coast), and heavy foot traffic. Choosing the floor material that can take the heat (and humidity) while still looking good — now that’s a smart investment.

But choosing that right flooring can be tricky. There are many challenges to the South Florida climate. Between high humidity that can cause certain materials to absorb moisture and in-turn warp to months when rain is a daily occurrence and waterproof flooring is essential; you want to make sure you choose the right flooring for your entryway.

So, what are the ideal materials for a South Florida’s home entryway? Here are some ideal options:

Waterproof / Water-Resistant Luxury Vinyl

Why it works well:

  • Modern waterproof vinyl options are engineered to resist moisture and mimic other materials like wood or stone.
  • It’s softer underfoot than tile, quieter, and easier to install (especially over concrete slabs).
  • Many brands have excellent wear layers that resist scratches, stains, and fading.

If you choose vinyl, make sure the vinyl is waterproof, not just water resistant. In addition, use a product with a thick wear layer (e.g. 20 mil or more) for durability. You will thank us later!

Engineered Hardwood

Why it works well:

  • Engineered hardwood offers the warm, upscale look of wood but is more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood in humid conditions.
  • Top-quality engineered wood can give you the aesthetic appeal of wood while tolerating moderate moisture fluctuations.

If you choose engineered hardwood, using high-quality hardwood with thick veneer and a strong stabilizing core. Should water encounter it, immediately wipe it up. In addition, you will also want to use an area rug or runner to buffer the most exposed area by the door.
